Bathroom renovations

We are a bathroom renovation company for powder rooms, family bathrooms, ensuites and small bathrooms. Every shower gets a waterproof membrane that is tested before a single tile goes on.

What's the most expensive part of a bathroom remodel?

The wet area costs the most: the shower or tub, the waterproofing behind it, the tile on it, and the plumbing under it. Moving a toilet or a shower drain adds the most on top, because the plumber has to open the floor. Keeping the fixtures where they are is the biggest saving in a bathroom.

Behind the tile

Problems we find on bathroom jobs

A bathroom looks fine until the tile comes off. These three are what we find most often behind it.

Rot under the old tub

Water gets past old caulking for years. The subfloor under the tub is soft when we lift it. We cut it out and replace it.

No membrane behind the old tile

Many older showers have tile on plain drywall. The wall behind is damp and crumbling. The new one gets a membrane.

A fan that vents into the attic

A fan that blows into the attic grows mould up there. We run the duct to an outside vent.

Pick your scope

Powder room, family bath or ensuite

Three kinds of bathroom, three very different jobs. The plumbing positions decide which one you are in.

Powder room

A toilet, a small vanity, a mirror, a light and a fan. Often done without touching the plumbing positions.

Family bathroom

Tub with a shower over it or a separate shower, a vanity with storage, tile floor and walls, a proper exhaust fan. The room most families use every morning.

Ensuite

A walk-in shower with glass, a double vanity, heated floor, better lighting. Sometimes we take space from a closet to make it fit.

Step by step

How a bathroom job runs

A bathroom runs in seven steps. The membrane test in the middle is the one that keeps it dry for years. Our process page shows who does what at each stage, on every job.

  1. Measure and choose

We measure the room and check where the drains are. You choose tile, vanity and fixtures, and we order them.

  2. Permit if needed

Moving a drain or adding a circuit needs a permit. We file it before demolition.

  3. Demolition

Everything comes out to the studs where the shower goes. We look at the subfloor and the pipes.

  4. Rough-in

New supply lines, drains, the fan circuit and the GFCI outlet go in. The inspector sees them before the walls close.

  5. Board and membrane

Cement board or a waterproof board goes on the wet walls. The membrane is applied and flood-tested.

  6. Tile and grout

Floor and walls are tiled, grouted and sealed. Edges get metal trim or bullnose.

  7. Fixtures and glass

Vanity, toilet, taps, lights and the glass go in last. The fan is vented outside and tested.

The quote

What changes a bathroom quote

Bathroom renovation cost climbs with these choices. The first one is the big one.

  1. Moving the toilet or the shower drain.
  2. A curbless shower, which needs the floor lowered or built up.
  3. Large format or natural stone tile, which needs a flatter wall and more prep.
  4. Heated floors and a second vanity.
  5. A second bathroom where there was none, which needs new drains and a permit.
Questions

What people ask about bathroom renovations

Two bathroom questions that come up before almost every quote.

Do I need a permit to renovate my bathroom in Ontario?

No for a like-for-like swap: a new vanity, toilet or tub in the same spot, new tile, paint. Yes when you move a drain, add a new bathroom, move a wall or add a circuit. We pull it and book the inspections.

Does moving the toilet or shower cost more?

Yes. A moved drain means the floor is opened, the pipe is re-run to the stack, and the plumber and the inspector are both involved. If the layout works, keeping the drains where they are is the biggest saving in a bathroom renovation.

Straight talk

When a handyman is the better call

If you need one cracked tile swapped or a new toilet dropped in, a handyman will do it faster and cheaper. We take the jobs where the walls come open.
